Project Spotlight: New Fingers for Old Music

Client: Larry Smith, Professor of Organ, Jacobs School of Music, IUB

New Fingers for Old Music was jointly produced by UITS/Media Design & Production and ISS/Graphic Services as an instructional DVD for IU’s Jacobs School of Music students. The program utilizes split screen technology that allows students to follow the sheet music for the compositions on the DVD as they watch Smith demonstrate fingering technique.

The DVD features Smith explaining and demonstrating fingering techniques for a variety of organ pieces, enabling students to see examples of proper technique on their laptops as they practice. “It’s the best mentoring device I can think of,” says Smith, who generally can work one-on-one with a given student for at most an hour per week.
